3 Healthy "Nice" Cream Recipes With Zero Added Sugar | Dairy & Gluten Free

Now that we're transitioning from summer to fall, there is one thing we all want to hang on to - ice cream! And since many of us are still experiencing hot temps through the month of September, having healthy ice cream recipes on hand are a must.

I love finding ways to incorporate a sweet treat that doesn't have a great impact on your blood sugar. Elevated blood sugar tells your body to store fat, rather than burn it, as outlined in Module 2 - Food for Your Hormies in the Balanced Bombshells Lifestyle Plan.

Beyond telling your body to store fat, elevated blood sugar also adds stress to your cycle, making you more likely to deal with PMS and period problems. So finding alternatives to indulging is key.

Whether you're dairy free like me or just looking for a sweet treat that will keep your hormies balanced, here are three must try flavors:

1. Matcha Nice Cream

This brings our matcha dates to a whole new level 😋

Y'all know how much I love matcha! It has 10x the antioxidants than regular green tea, which does wonders for your skin and natural detox. It also cleanses the liver to keep those hormones and toxins flowing out of your body when they're suppose to.

I always look for a ceremonial grade matcha powder because it has a fresh, clean taste. Matcha is also suppose to be bright green. If you've ever seen those brownish green powders they're not as fresh and taste really earthy.

*Matcha does contain caffeine, so this recipe is best enjoyed before 2pm as to not impact your sleep.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 frozen bananas

  • 2 tsp. matcha

  • 1/2 cup almond milk

  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. Add ingredients to a high powered blender

2. Blend until smooth

3. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper and spoon ice cream into pan

4. Freeze for up to one hour

5. With an ice cream scoop, add 2-3 scoops to a bowl and top with your favorite toppings!

2. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter

Chocolate and peanut butter are one of my favorite combinations! I can't visit an ice cream shop without hoping they have a dairy free version. It just brings me back to making Reese cup s'mores when we went camping as a kid.

Chocolate is loaded with magnesium which will keep your stress at bay. Peanut butter contains vitamin B6, which can give you a very zen vibe if you've been feeling irritable.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 frozen bananas

  • 2 tbsp. dark chocolate powder

  • 1/2 cup almond milk

  • 3 tbsp. softened peanut butter

DIRECTIONS

1. Add bananas, chocolate and almond milk to a high powered blender

2. Blend until smooth

3. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper and spoon ice cream into pan

4. Add the peanut butter in spoonfuls on top of the ice cream. Using a knife, gently swirl in peanut butter making a nice marble effect.

5. Freeze for up to one hour

6. With an ice cream scoop, add 2-3 scoops to a bowl and top a little more peanut butter and chocolate chips!

3. Strawberry Coconut Dream Team

Looking for a more fruity flavor? Strawberry is the way to go. Loaded with vitamin C to lower your stress hormones and support your luteal phase, strawberries also do wonders for your skin and menstrual health. Mixed with the tropical flavor of coconut, you'll feel like you're still on summer vacation.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 frozen bananas

  • 2 cups frozen strawberries

  • 1/2 cup almond milk

  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes

DIRECTIONS

1. Add fruit and almond milk to a high powered blender

2. Blend until smooth

3. Transfer to a bowl and gently mix in coconut flakes

4. Line a loaf pan with parchment paper and spoon ice cream into pan

5. Freeze for up to one hour

6. With an ice cream scoop, add 2-3 scoops to a bowl and top with extra strawberries and coconut flakes

HEALTHY ADD ONS

I love partnering treats with added protein and healthy fats to keep our blood sugar balanced. These add ons won't be needed if you treat yourself to some nice cream after a full meal. If you'd like to use these recipes as a snack option, here are some ideas for add ins:

Collagen is a gut friendly protein powder. It's a great addition to your diet to create healthy hormones, while also improving your skin, hair, and nails. This includes any cellulite!

  • Add 1 tsp - 1 tbsp per serving of MCT oil

I love adding MCT oil to smoothies and recipes like nice cream. It's a healthy fat derived from coconut oil. It stabilizes your blood sugar and also has a cleansing effect on the body. What I love most about it is that when ingested, it bypasses the digestive system and is used as energy right away, giving you a bit more pep in your step!

These are best to reblend for your serving size or add to your recipe to save for snacks.

My favorite toppings include:

  • unsweetened coconut flakes

  • dark chocolate chips, I love the brand Guittard

  • 1 spoonful of nut or seed butter. Can be partnered with your seed cycling for hormone balance

  • fresh fruit
